Description
On November the 9th, 2020, I ran a YouTube show entitled ‘The Blues Hour’. It was by request and the object was to show the Blues influence in what I do. The show proved to be very popular and a large number of people asked for a hard copy of the music and chat.
I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed making it. It is also an acknowledgement to the album I learned to play guitar by, Davy Grahams ‘Folk Blues and Beyond’ which continues to enthral me even to this day. Phil
Please note – on the downloadable version I have edited the songs in order and separated the chat element out so that you can listen to the music uninterrupted by my ramblings. You can subsequently choose, or indeed, choose not to listen to the talking element.
Track listing. (Back)
1. Ain’t Nobody’s Business What I Do (Porter Grainger)
Learned from the Davy Graham Album.
The Gibson LG. Standard tuning
2. Its All Over Now (Bobby Womack)
He hated the Stones version until the royalties started coming in.
The last guitar built for me by David Oddy. Open G tuning.
3. Lonesome Whistle Blow (Hank Williams)
I am perpetually and wrongly saying that this is a Jimmy Rodgers song. I first learnt it from Little Feat.
The last Oddy. Open G.
4. Going Down Slow (Jimmy Oden)
Learned from Davy Graham.
The mighty Stella. £25 quid to you. My first guitar was a Tatra and very similar to this one. This is an early 60’s one. They are unchanged since first manufactured in the late 30’s!
5. Cannot Keep from Crying (Blind Willy Johnson)
Learned from Davy Graham.
The black standard. My most hard-working guitar.
6. 13 Question Method (Chuck Berry)
First learned from a Ry Cooder recording.
This guitar was not made specifically for me. Strange it should end up being the ‘go to’ guitar.
7. The Last Fair Deal (Robert Johnson)
Probably more great songs from RJ than any other bluesman.
Back to the Stella. It’s a dreadful guitar but it has character.
8. Road to Hell (Chris Rea)
Not a blues number but written by one of life’s better slide players.
My fave alt tuning. Last Oddy. G minor.
9. Cocaine Blues (Rev. Gary Davies)
Learned from Davy Graham then referenced back to the original.
Based on Davy’s version but with plenty of ‘me’ in it. Back to Black.
10. Leaving Blues (Leadbelly)
Huddy Leadbetter. Master of the Stella 12 string guitar.
The LG is on semi permanent loan from Mike Selly.
11. Leaving Blues/ Lonesome Whistle (Leadbelly / Hank Williams)
The playout track. A very old Phil Beer Band recording. Seemed appropriate clunkers and all. – not included on download versions
Tracks 12-20. The Chat.
