DISC ONE – SONGS
Old Riley (Bob Dylan)
One of Dylans ‘trad’ songs, taught to me by Ashley Hutchings and recorded by the Albion Band on the ‘1990’ album.
All My Love’s Laughter (Jim Webb)
An obscure Jim Webb song which Chris While originally suggested for Deb Sandlands’ album of supernatural songs ‘Semer Water’. I liked it and kept it for myself.
Fire in the Hole (Becker/Fagen)
Always wanted to do a Steely Dan song. The rain arrived as if to order.
The Holy Brook (Johnny Coppin/Frank Mansell)
One of Gloucestershire poet Frank Mansell’s works set to music by old friend and singer/song-writer Johnny Coppin.
Limbo (Jimmy Cliff)
Show of Hands recorded this song on our earliest sessions ‘in the barn’. This version is closer to the Neville brothers interpretation.
Our Lady of the Well Uackson Browne)
Our old friend John Bickford first introduced us to Jackson Browne way back in the seventies and nothing was ever the same again. Deb Sandland adds her dulcet tones.
Abroad for Pleasure (Trad)
I did several runs of ‘Larkrise’ with the Albion Band and this was my favourite song from the pub scene close to the end of the play.
Acadian driftwood (The Band)
The entire story of a people in one song. Once again brought back to my attention by Ashley Hutchings.
DISC TWO – INSTRUMENTALS
Gloucester hornpipe/Off to California (Trad)
I learnt the first tune from the great English fiddle player Paul Burgess of the Old Swan Band. The second tune is a ceilidh standard.
Vive L’Amour/Masters of this Hall (Trad/Trad)
A Breton tune learned from Johnny Coppin who got it from Pierre Bensusan.
Alex Pattersons return (Beer)
To celebrate young master Alex Pattersons triumphant return from his expedition to the east.
Varso Vianna (Trad)
Another Ceilidh tune.
Lizzies Set (Trad)
A jig and a reel featuring Lizzie Wescott on fiddle.
Telling me Lies (Linda Thompson/Betsy Cook)
Recorded a couple of years ago at The Patterson family barn and finally laid to rest on this album. Steve Crickett plays drums and percussion. Nick Quarmby plays bass.
Mampy Moose/Brilliant Pebbles/Philip Brunels (Wesson/Hart/Trad)
A live set with Gareth Turner on diatonic accordian. The first two tunes are from the great reggae/folk band E2 and the last tune is from Quebec.
Flowers of the Forest/When this Bloody War is Over (Trad)
The first tune was learned from Fairport. The second is the gospel hymn learned in the Methodist chapel all those years ago. The words are from the trenches of the first world war.
