Description

“Recorded over three years of show, ‘Plays Guitar..’ is selection of the most popular songs and tunes. I’ve mostly lost track of where they were recorded with the exception of Willin’ which is from a show at the Plough Arts Centre in Torrington.

ironically, tracks 2, 3, 4, 12 and 13 are from a single recording which was never intended to be part of this project at all. They were recorded onto a laptop using a single (Hi Quality) mic at the methodist chapel at Okehampton 2012 during a ‘Wren Trust’ benefit show. By accident they turned out to have a great feel and atmosphere and thanks are due to mastering engineer and producer supreme Mark Tucker for bringing them to fruition.

The mediums used were Pro Tools on a Mac laptop or a Yamaha AW workstation using, variously, Focuswrite or TLA pre-amps and interfaces. The mics were Neumann, Audio Technical and SE. The DIs were from our own local Orchid Electronics. With the exception of the fiddle, which came from Tich at Sonic, all the guitars, mandolins, tenor guitars and mandocellos were built by David Oddy. Help and assistance on the night came from either Kevin Henderson or latterly, Jon Benns. Thanks lads.

Thanks to Mark Tucker – mastering and post production. Jon and ken – audio butlers and general home helps. All those awfully nice chaps at Talking Elephant. Brad Waters for the cover photography and design. All of the small Arts Centres, pub back rooms, Folk Clubs, House gigs, WI meetings and late night bashes that have hosted these sessions.

Mixed at Lions Rest. mastered in the Shed.
