Guitar workshop days
Hi There Folks.
The first clear date for a ‘Day of Guitars’ will be in the village of Exminster in Devon. Just outside Exeter. It will, funnily enough, take place in the Methodist hall where I went to Sunday school all those years ago. It’s actually the perfect place. Comfy, warm and with good facilities.
It will start at 10:30 in the morning and wind up around 4:30 in the afternoon.
To start by making it clear. I’m basing this on the old ‘General Guitar Workshop’ which was a regular feature at Sidmouth folk festival for 3/4 years running.
I’m not a teacher. I taught myself to play over a very long period of time. I was given a uke when I was about six and moved onto the guitar when I was about ten. There was a lot of music in my family which was church based. My mum played the piano/organ. My Dad was a good dance band violinist.
I learnt by listening to the radio and from two books. Yes folks, Bert Weedon’s ‘Play in a Day’, an extravagant claim, and the excellent ‘How to play guitar’ by Dan Morgan. Anyone could do worse than have these two items. Also, very prevalent at the time were the individual Mel Bay tutors for specific instruments.
That’s just to set the scene. We’ll keep the tea and coffee topped up at all times and we’ll do a Cornish pasty lunch. We’ll check dietary requirements closer to the time.
I’ll start by breaking down what I got from the aforementioned sources and then go onto what are now my practice regimes. Some of them are standard, many of them are mine, devised over decades. That’ll be a good 10:30 to 12:00 noon.
Quick break.
Then onto working our way around the group and identifying people’s specific hold ups and issues. We will then have the lunch break.
We’ll reconvene around 2:00 PM and work through peoples hang ups and problems and try to come up with solutions or things to aim for. Tea or coffee as you wish. Bit of a jam session and wind up around 4:30.
This is for embryo/intermediate guitar players. If you’re a genius, I can’t really show you anything.
The cost for the day will be £80 inc.
I would cap it at 8 people. Think that’s the comfy number for this in order to keep everyone engaged.
Finally. There will be two identical events. Saturday 14th June at Elm Farm Swannington. The day after I do a show there. They have an extensive mailing list to appeal to first so I’m obliged to let them do that. When that is done, I’ll throw it open.
The third possibility is at Flore near Northampton. No date for this yet but will have one soon.
I am also actively seeking couple of more northern possibilities east and west.
